Our experience

Combined years of expertise.

Three co-founders spanning SEO, AI Search, development and digital strategy. Deep experience across agency, in-house and consultancy environments - applied directly to every engagement we take on.

Philosophy
A small team
by design.

Large agencies are built to scale. That often means standardised processes, broad client portfolios and delivery models that rely on layers of junior resource. Senior specialists tend to be focused on pitches and reporting, with less direct involvement in the day-to-day work.

Position1 is structured differently. We take on fewer clients and keep senior practitioners directly involved throughout - from the initial conversation through to delivery. There are no handoffs once a project begins, which helps maintain continuity between analysis, decision-making and implementation.

For complex technical work - whether that’s competitive verticals, large-scale migrations or emerging areas like AI Search - that continuity matters. The detail and context behind the work are what drive results, and those are harder to retain when they’re passed between teams. We keep that expertise close to the work itself.

That approach is grounded in experience. Between us, we’ve led SEO programmes across enterprise brands, worked both agency-side and in-house and built teams and strategies designed to operate at scale. We understand not just how to identify issues, but how to prioritise, implement and sustain change in complex environments.

Ian — Co-founder, Position 1

Ian

Ian began his SEO career in 2006, launching a football social bookmarking site that quickly gained traction and sparked a passion for search. After early in-house roles in property and travel with TUI, he joined Golley Slater in 2010, where he led successful campaigns for brands such as Center Parcs and Cotswold Outdoors before heading up the agency's SEO department.

In 2012, Ian moved to Ayima, the UK's leading technical SEO agency at the time, driving performance for major fashion and iGaming brands including Arcadia, Betfair, Coral, Ladbrokes and William Hill. Promoted to Head of SEO in 2016, he helped redefine the agency's offering and mentor the next generation of consultants.

After moving back in-house with loveholidays to build the strategic SEO foundations behind its rapid growth, Ian launched position1.io in 2022 to bring his technical expertise and commercial experience to ambitious brands seeking meaningful growth.

SEO has never mattered more - it just looks different. AI-driven search is built on the same signals that good SEO has always optimised for. We help ambitious brands understand that shift and act on it.

Strategy & Operations

Adam — Co-founder, Position 1

Adam

Adam has over two decades of experience in SEO and digital strategy, with a particular focus on technical SEO, site architecture and large-scale delivery. He has led strategy and execution for high-value clients across both agency and in-house environments, developing approaches that balance technical rigour with commercial impact.

Having held senior leadership roles, including SEO Director at Ayima, Adam has worked across complex, multi-site ecosystems, designing scalable frameworks for auditing, migration and ongoing optimisation. His work spans a wide range of sectors and platforms, with deep experience in handling modern technical challenges such as JavaScript rendering, indexation and performance at scale.

At Position1, Adam leads on Technical Innovation, shaping the agency’s technical proposition and tooling approach. His focus is on ensuring that strategy is grounded in data, defensible in execution and capable of adapting to the evolving search landscape.

GEO and AEO aren't coming for SEO. They're an extension of it. The same rigour - just a different set of questions about what you're optimising for.

Nicky — Co-founder, Position 1

Nicky

Nicky began working in the digital industry in 1999, in the formative days of website builds and early online marketing. What started as a hands-on role focused on account and project management quickly developed into a career centred around client services, operations and agency leadership. Over the years, she has played a key part in guiding agencies through periods of rapid growth, helping to sharpen their operations while building long-lasting client and partner relationships.

At Ayima, where she spent more than a decade, Nicky managed some of the agency's most complex accounts and projects, driving meaningful performance for a roster of high-value clients. With a career shaped by streamlining processes, fostering strong partnerships and leading teams in fast-moving environments, she brings a blend of operational precision and commercial focus to Position1.

A strategy that doesn't get implemented isn't a strategy. It's a document. Our job is to close that gap.
